  • BIM is the latest buzz word in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, It is one of the most abused word in the last decade. If we need to understand BIM we have to first clear the BIM noise around us and start with a clean mind. Imagine a blackboard filled with jumbled words, a cacophony of jargon, and technicalities that confuse even the experts. That’s the noise surrounding BIM. To grasp its essence truly, we must first erase the chaos and approach it with a fresh perspective. You see, the construction industry is unique. It touches the lives of almost everyone on this planet. Whether you reside in a humble mud hut or zip through the sky in a high-flying aircraft, you’re a consumer of Architectural, Engineering, and Construction services. So, let’s demystify BIM from a common person’s standpoint. In the world of AEC, resources are a precious commodity. 
  • Building a prototype isn’t an option, and the repercussions are felt through cost overruns, time delays, wastage, and environmental harm. The silver bullet? Technology. Not the glitzy, superficial kind, but tech designed specifically for the Design and Build industry.   • Are you self-doubting yourself?
  • Why did I even do Architecture?? Is this thought visiting your mind these days??
Let’s keep these negative thoughts aside for a while and look at this situation with a ​different perspective.
  • May be, just maybe, your building designing skills are not as good as Architecture demands, but it would be completely wrong to think that Architecture starts and ends with design. That is actually NOT the scene.
  • Friends, we have cleared architecture, and giving up was never in the syllabus. So, do not self-doubt your abilities and capabilities.
  • As an individual, you already have talent and skills; additionally, pursuing Architecture has for sure added more to it. And not only technical skills are added or enhanced but real life skills and qualities are added too.
  • To divert your mind towards the positive side of this, "I am not a good Architect or Designer"; let me tell you actually how many worthy skills you already have after completing this Architectural Journey.

  • That’s a long list, friends. And I am so sure I have missed a lot of them even after writing so many.
  • Architect and architecture sounds so magical and classy to the one who has not been through the process. It is not like I was forced to pursue it or forced to finish it, but whatever the love-hate relationship I have with Architecture, I will always be grateful to the process and journey it took me onto. In college library we used to find magazines like Domus, Dezeen, Architectural Digest and a lot many. You can be a part of any of these or even start your own if you have confidence about your writing skills. I don’t think any architecture magazine is completed without the touch of an Architect in it in some way. I also came across a publishing company name Altrim Publishers. 3. Academician
A NATA teacher, a college Professor, a visiting faculty, taking electives in colleges - you can be a part of the knowledge sector of Architecture too. A BIM manager is the project lead and the primary point of contact for the various BIM coordinators within a project. The BIM manager’s end responsibility is to deliver a qualitative model (on time) which can be used for the defined goals of the BIM and in that way support the construction process. 5. Project Manager

Project managers oversee the planning and delivery of construction projects. They ensure that work is completed on time and within budget. They organise logistics, delegate work, and keep track of spending.

If nature love and saving the environment is what you are keen towards, then this might be your thing.   • The enormous task of measuring and designing the Hungarian State Opera House was assigned to CÉH Inc. of Budapest, Hungary. The use of point cloud technology in conjunction with building surveying and geodetic methods allowed for the creation of a detailed 3D model of this intricate structure while it was still in use. The final model is currently being used in the restoration process and will be used for management of the historic building in the future.
  • In 1873, the Hungarian Opera House was decided to be constructed. The jury chose the design submitted by renowned Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl after a public tender (1814-1891). The neo-classical structure was started in 1875 and finished nine years later, despite slight delays. On September 27, 1884, the opening night犀利士 – to which Emperor and King Franz Joseph were also invited – was conducted.
  • Miklós Ybl’s neo-renaissance palace has remained largely unchanged in the 130 years since it was built, and its repertoire and world-class acoustics continue to draw opera and ballet fans alike. Thousands of visitors flock to the building each year to see one of Budapest’s most spectacular nineteenth-century national monuments.
Building survey and its challenges
  • CÉH was tasked with conducting a survey of the Hungarian State Opera House and its other facilities (shop, sales centre, offsite storage, rehearsal hall, warehouses, offices, and workshops) and creating an architectural model based on the point cloud data. Trimble RealWorks 10.0 and Faro Scene 5.5 were used to process the data. It’s worth noting that gathering the data took a lot less time than processing it. Despite the fact that data collection ran simultaneously with the survey, the building’s complex layout and spaces, as well as the project’s difficulty, made it a time-consuming job. This necessitated several rounds of surveying before a specific building block could be completed. As a result, the survey and registration process took longer and involved further administrative work.

  • Despite having a large number of spheres and checkerboards on hand, the Opera’s staff would unwittingly move these instruments, preventing the surveyors from aligning the point clouds later. However, as time passed, the two crews became more accustomed to each other, and everyone’s work became more effective. Certain areas of the building (such as the props warehouse) were constantly changing, or the surfaces of these areas were too complicated for the measuring instruments (e.g., the rigging system covered in steel mesh, black surfaces backstage), making precise measurements difficult. Surveying the vaulted, often zig-zag spaces that make up the building’s auxiliary and mechanical areas on the lower levels was the most challenging and time-consuming aspect of the task. The surveyors were also confronted with similar vaulted structures on the elevations, a legacy of the original 19th century architect, Miklós Ybl.
  • Key surfaces, such as walls and floors, were often obscured by props and other equipment. In these instances, survey results will serve as the basis for only a rudimentary 3Dmodel. Photos and videos would be extremely helpful in recording the specifics of spaces that the scanner could not reach. The raw measurement data was imported into Faro Scene 5.5 for pre-processing and Trimble RealWorks 10.0 for finalising the measurements, which took a long time and resulted in extremely large point cloud files.   • “In the past, we’d have to bring a PC to the client’s presentation simply to be able to execute the project in real time,” Margeta explains. “And that’s where Twinmotion Cloud comes in handy, because we no longer have to care about the PC.”
  • Now, the team can simply submit their product to the cloud for rendering, then stream it back to the local PC to view. “This allows us to be less concerned about hardware limitations,” Margeta continues. “Everything is taking place on the internet. The project manager may access the model, examine it, and provide quick feedback to you from any location.”

Take it further with Unreal Engine

  • Quixel has partnered with Epic Games to provide an universe of lifelike 3D scanned materials, textures, and objects accessible to Twinmotion and Unreal Engine users for free.

  • Effective urban planning is about more than redesigning cities and towns. At its core, it’s about local democracy —the idea that the people who use a space—and whose taxes go towards its development—should have a stake in it. 
  • Public participation is widely regarded as critical for ethical—and successful—urban planning. When residents are given an insight into the development process, the community takes better care of the area, demonstrates greater goodwill towards the project, and enjoys a higher level of user satisfaction once it’s completed. Because of this, the way proposed infrastructure works are communicated is incredibly important. 
  • Previously, local authorities might have relied solely on pencil-drawn sketches or miniature models to explain their plans. Now, interactive 3D tools enable them to provide compelling animations to go alongside static renders. These real-time visualizations provide a much more accurate sense of how the development will change the area.

Fast and effective urban planning visualisation

  • Nestled among the pine forests of south-west France lies Sophia Antipolis, the French Riviera's answer to California's Silicon Valley. It might seem like an unlikely spot for global technology giants and high-tech startups—but since its opening in 1969, Sophia Antipolis has attracted big names in technology, including Amadeus, Cisco, IBM, and Microsoft. 
  • The whole place is laid out as a park, with a notable absence of straight roads and an abundance of trees. In fact, two thirds of Sophia Antipolis is maintained as green areas. There’s also a firm sense of belonging—people based here identify strongly with the place, even calling themselves “Sophiepolitans”.
  • Given the residents' pride in the area, it’s understandable that when the region’s administrative authority wanted to undertake major infrastructure works, they needed an effective way to communicate the plans to the public.
  • The works proposed by the Sophia Antipolis Agglomeration Community (CASA) were for a new bus and tram route infrastructure. Designed to take the pressure off Sophia Antipolis’ transport network as the technology park grows, the bus/tram route includes 17 new stations, along with cycle lanes. The entire project has to deliver on a promise of sustainable development. 
  • To help the public understand its proposed plans, CASA commissioned Egis, a major international group involved in the construction, engineering, and mobility services sectors, to deliver a range of communication materials, as well as infrastructure studies. These would showcase a major section of the bus and tram route, and include a mix of video and still images.
  • The Egis team opted to use fast archviz tool Twinmotion to create these assets. While Twinmotion is perhaps best known for its efficacy in creating smaller residential visualizations, it’s increasingly proving its scalability on larger urban development projects like this.

Bringing different datasets together easily.

  • Egis’ first task was to digitally replicate the areas of Sophia Antipolis that would be affected by the development. It created a model of the works’ contextual environment based on data from OpenStreetMap—a global collaborative mapping project—combined with data from a topographic survey that was carried out on site to improve the accuracy of the digital model. 
  • The building models lining the bus-tram route were also created using open data and textured with façades from InfraWorks, Autodesk’s civil infrastructure design tool. The team created the models for the proposed new roads and infrastructure facilities from scratch using BIM infrastructure software Mensura Genius. Models from these and other third-party tools were exported to Twinmotion as IFC, SKP, and FBX files. “Data transfer to Twinmotion was pretty easy,” says William Weltzer, Project Engineer at Egis.
  • Twinmotion has been used by Weltzer for almost a year. The program is a perfect fit for urban planning tasks for him. “It’s a fantastic communication tool—it makes it a lot easier for customers and the general public to comprehend the project than old-school tools,” he adds. “You can show anything in three dimensions, with moving cars and plants, as well as realistic lighting and shadows. You can even visualize what the project will look like once it is completed from the perspective of a pedestrian.”
  • With all of the data in Twinmotion, Egis was able to use the tool’s robust feature set to bring the visualization to life. It was realistically populated with genuine features such as people and traffic to simulate how traveling along the bus-tram line would feel. “Twinmotion was tremendously helpful in producing the dynamic vehicle trajectories seen in the video,” Weltzer adds. “Moreover, creating the gorgeous and lively greenery with the paintbrush was simple.”
  • Because Twinmotion has been designed with ease of use in mind, it enables teams to create visualizations quickly—ideal for meeting tight deadlines. “Twinmotion enabled us to produce photorealistic renderings without spending too much time in production,” says Weltzer. “It’s very user-friendly and has features that are useful and relevant for our projects. “In my opinion, it has the tools best suited for what we do.”
  • Egis is one of a number of firms that has recognized it can capitalize on Twinmotion’s fast workflows to deliver big projects like these. Beyond the architects and designers using the tool for residential projects, there’s a growing pool of urban planners and government agencies using Twinmotion to visualize large swathes of urban areas—even entire cities. 
  • With new updates being made to Twinmotion all the time, project engineers like Weltzer can look forward to even more improvements to their urban planning visualization workflows. “I can’t wait to discover the new features and optimizations you’re working on to make our renderings even better!” he concludes.

Chickenville, located in Zagreb, Croatia, SKROZ is an award-winning architectural office engaged in the research and creation of space. The firm has used Archicad intensively for the past three years. Before migrating their practice to BIM, they used mainly AutoCAD. Since incorporating Archicad in their everyday practice, all projects have been completed using the software, from design sketches to construction plans.

  • One of the principals in the office has been highly engaged with Archicad since version 4.55, and introduced the firm to a wide range of its benefits. In recent years, transition to BIM in general became necessary, in which Archicad was an obvious choice for our office to evolve,
  • explains Marin Jelčić, one of the founding partners of the company.
CHICKENVILLE Project
  • CHICKENVILLE was a project for one of their long-term clients in the village of Rakov potok near Samobor, Croatia, for whom they have completed many projects. A small kindergarten was one of those ventures. While speaking with the children, the client discovered that, despite living in a rural area, the majority of them have no idea where eggs come from. As a result, the client agreed to construct an organic egg farm where children could observe the entire process, from egg nesting to hens laying fresh eggs. It had to be a modern farm that was simple to create with friends and family using locally sourced raw materials and met the highest eco-farming standards. It is one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions, with children from a variety of kindergartens being supervised by professionals from the faculty of agriculture.
  • The plan was to build a multi-functional space/project that could double as an egg farm and a tourist attraction. That was the initial thought: this would be a small “village,” a settlement with all of the essential features including lodging, utilities, plazas, sidewalks, and public buildings. A “public” street was built in the centre to give tourists entry. This is a shared central area that visually connects the chicken coops while not interfering with the basic purpose of egg farming. The chicken coops surround the central zone of Chickenville, which allows visitors and farmers access (feeding, care, and cleaning).

The materials used are typical of farm buildings in the region (unfinished fir, chicken wire). Much of the work was performed by inexperienced metal workers, the investor’s neighbours, and relatives due to the small budget.
  • The aim was to build a modern design using traditional materials while maintaining the look and charm of a traditional chicken coop. Since this is also a tourist project, additional work was required to direct the tourists. Chickenville’s visual identity was created as a result, and it now has its own coat of arms, flag, plazas, and even street numbers.
  • From start to finish, the project took just four months. Since the project’s budget was small, fast decisions were required. The architects used Archicad to estimate and optimise the construction costs of a single repeated unit, keeping in mind that every unit cost reduction is multiplied by 20 in the total project cost.
  • “There was no special modelling challenge worth noting because the model is very simple,” Mr Jeli explained. “However, we did model it to the smallest detail so there were no surprises or misunderstandings at the construction site.”

  • Hospitals are one of the most complex buildings in terms of use, special needs and inside equipment. Many aspects of BIM were already among the client’s requirements to ensure the design satisfies the needs of the building users when LINK arkitektur was selected to take on the rebuilding and expansion of Stockholm Southern Hospital (SÖS, Södersjukhuset in Swedish). With their meticulous and patient-focused architecture, the building design received Miljöbyggnad Silver certification.
  • The project included renovation and extension of existing buildings, demolition of some older buildings and addition of new buildings to the site. In total, the project expanded to 70 000 m2 in 13 buildings with 3000 rooms.
  • The involvement of a BIM solution in such a project helps clients and the building users to understand what the building will be like, making it easier for them to participate in and contribute to the design process as healthcare providers. The clients’ and users’ contributions benefit the architect, and BIM ensures easier communication on the specification of the building, rooms, arrangements with great visual aid.
  • **BIM offers an opportunity to collect information about the building elements, equipment and furniture into a database and connect this to the building model. With this workflow, architects can have a better understanding of the unique healthcare requirements of each room, then discuss the specifications with the healthcare workers and consultants.**
  • In such a complex project with several architects, consultants and engineers, quality control of the models and drawings is of the utmost importance. LINK has an internal process for this purpose: each building had an appointed Model Manager, who were responsible for the accuracy of the model. Their task was to audit the model inside Archicad, export to the various formats, and do further checking in Solibri. They also had elevated permissions in the projects; for example, they managed the attributes and layers.
